I’ve been reading more around the subject of design leadership and leading a design team within a busy agile environment. This subject interests me as I’ve led design teams previously and I understand the challenges that can present themselves. I always want to produce and see created the highest quality design work for my product teams. For this to happen I aim to inspire my team members as much as possible especially the junior design team members.

Clear direction helps, with design goals and early project briefing so that the team feels included and part of the design process from the start. My approach is to focus on motivation and communication which I see as key elements when working within a hybrid, part remote working schedule.

My last design team worked fully remote in the post Covid pandemic workplace, I used collaborative software and team calls to bridge the communication gaps. Figjam and Miro helped along with company messaging systems, team mentoring and support.

At the end of the day I trusted my team to be as creative as possible and I worked to develop a solid design team. Seeing design team members engaging with their respective product teams was rewarding. Also seeing design innovation, great interactive and UX design during product reviews was excellent. See high quality UX design going into our products and the wider business was a good feeling.

I’m proud to have built my design team and left it in a far better place, I feel that my design team members will on to achieve great things in their design careers.
