I’ve been working with a client’s design team recently and it’s been great to see effective design leadership in an in-house design team. Giving clear design direction is key and it’s a valuable skill set to develop as a lead or senior designer.
As I led a design team in last two previous roles I always aimed to produce the highest quality design work that my team were capable of. I worked to inspire my design team members at every opportunity, this included regular encouragement, feedback and mentoring.
Putting regular design team meetings in place really helped as it created unity and understanding within the team. As I’ve seen recently clear direction and team motivation is key as is good communication.
I found that using interactive design tools such as Figjam and Miro helped in remote ideation sessions whilst managing my fully remote team. In the post pandemic workplace using collaborative software and regular team calls helped to bridge this gap when meeting in person isn’t always possible.
I trusted my team to be as creative as possible and to innovation in design solutions on a daily basis. I found that nurturing a creative environment helped to start a great design process.
No design or product teams are the same but creative designers have so much common ground and this can be found with regular interactions. This all helps the wider business by developing a positive approach within the work place.
